Auf Deutsch is a German-language ITV schools TV series from the 1960s, covering German Language for secondary school pupils.

A series of interviews with people from Germany about their life and work, with props from their life to discuss with the interviewer in a simple question and answer format.

The interviewer is well-known German television personality Carlheinz Hollmann, who alternates in the spring and summer terms with German journalist Renate Harpprecht.

In the autumn term all of the guests come from the town of WedelGreen-marker.png in north West Germany near Hamburg. A range of school children, young people and local professionals are interviewed, culminating with the town's mayor.

In the spring and summer terms the net is spread wider for people from other areas of West Germany to discuss their pastimes, including several from the nearby town of LübeckGreen-marker.png.

The programmes were made at ATV's studios in England and all of the guests were invited over specially to make the programmes in the UK, rather than in their home environment[1].

The interviews aimed for natural language speaking and were not carefully controlled for comprehension of every word, rather viewers were expected to be able to understand the overall gist of the conversation from the context, rhythm, repetition and visual cues. In each episode some key vocabulary was highlighted in a 'close-up' section with deliberate speaking and visuals showing an important message.

This philosophy of natural language taking priority over detailed grammatical work was the speciality of the programme advisor, Mary Glasgow, who also published a successful range of educational books and magazines. The programmes were intended for students studying in the fourth and fifth forms at school towards their secondary school examinations, but were not linked directly to any exam syllabus.

After one year of national broadcasts, and another of repeats to schools in the Midlands, West of England and Wales only, the series was replaced by another new venture in German by television from ATV, in the form of a drama series called Wir Waren Vier.

Locations

The programmes were made in England, with guests from various places in West Germany.
