Words and Pictures: Phonics Year 2
Phonics Year 2 is a unit of the BBC Schools TV series Words and Pictures from the 2000s, covering English for Primary pupils.
A unit of Words and Pictures supporting spelling in the second year of primary school (or Primary 2/3 in Scotland), specfically the different ways of spelling the same sound.
Sophie Aldred is living in a special lighthouse which keeps words safe, using its light to highlight the rules needed to spell them correctly and relevant words out on the waves. She sings songs, looks through her telescope to see what is happening and plays with children around the seaside. A different celebrity reads each week's story.
Each episode also introduces a sound shell to hear how words sound, which Sophie collects together, plus animated characters Sid the Seagull who tries to spell words while flying through the clouds, Salty Sam's Squeeze Box, a sailor with an accordion on which he can piece together the letters and sounds of words then sing a song with the words, and Colin the Clam who presents a quiz on forming words in his Wonderful Underwater World of Words.
Magic pencil appears, writing out complete words, and presented as a 3D animation with the pencil itself shaped like a lighthouse.
The series is set at La Corbière Lighthouse on Jersey.
