Understanding is an ITV schools TV series from the 1960s, covering PSHE and Sex Education for secondary school pupils.

  • the first sex education programmes on British schools TV, designed for 15-16 year olds, meant to encourage responsible discussion between teachers and pupils, including programmes on venereal disease, "unmarried mothers" and the results of a 1965 survey on The Sexual Behaviour of Young People
  • originally broadcast by Granada Television, Westward Television and Television Wales & the West in summer 1966, then repeated for a wider audience including London viewers (but not the whole ITV network) in summer 1967
  • replaced by The Facts are These
