Details of 1986-87 broadcasts of the ITV Schools series Stop, Look, Listen, covering topics for primary school pupils.

In 1986-87 there were 9 new episodes across the year. The teacher's notes actually listed a 10th new episode, a remake of the Supermarket episode which had only been introduced in the previous year. Supermarket was not listed as new in the ITV School annual programme guide or termly wallchart, and I don't believe it was actually remade this year (though if you know otherwise please do get in touch by email).

These episodes used the traffic light face opening titles and the High Life theme tune.

1986-87 was the 11th of 26 years of new broadcasts, and the 16th of 38 years overall, for Stop, Look, Listen.

9 of the 56 episodes broadcast this year were new, and the episodes first broadcast this year were repeated until 1992.

2. Coalminers

A coal fire at home demonstrates the need for coal to be mined. A group of miners arrive at work by bus and change into their bright orange overalls. They collect safety equipment and fix lamps to their helmets, then descend the pit in a cage and jump onto a large conveyor belt to travel to the coal face, where a large machine cuts the coal.

At dinner time the miners switch off the machines and take their sandwiches and water. Later the coal is lifted to the surface, and so are the men at the end of their shift. The coal is sorted and cleaned and sent off by rail or road, and the miners shower off the coaldust.

Bricks are delivered to a building site and we see bricklayers using them to build houses.

We then see clay being quarried, and the largely automated process of making it into bricks at Blockleys Bricks in TelfordViolet-marker.png. After being fired in the kiln a variety of different types of bricks are shown. Finally, a group of children look at the different types of brick buildings around their town.
