Stop, Look, Listen: 1983-84
Details of 1983-84 broadcasts of the ITV Schools series Stop, Look, Listen, covering topics for primary school pupils.
10 new episodes were made for 1983-84, spread across the year with some on people who help us in the autumn, some on food in the spring, and some on trips in the summer.
With a repertoire of 56 separate subjects Stop, Look, Listen started to broadcast two parallel 'Sets' of programmes each week, with 'Set A' on Mondays & Wednesdays and 'Set B' on Tuesdays & Thursdays. The two sets represented the two annual cycles of programmes which had been built up over several years, and were designed so that teachers could use one set of programmes with their classes this year and the other set next year, in whichever order they wished.
These episodes used the traffic light face opening titles and the High Life theme tune.
1983-84 was the 8th of 26 years of new broadcasts, and the 13th of 38 years overall, for Stop, Look, Listen.
10 of the 56 episodes broadcast this year were new, and the episodes first broadcast this year were repeated until 1992.

3. Baked Beans
A group of people are eating baked beans - some hot and some cold - as part of a daily taste test. Then we see the manufacturing process.
The beans arrive from America is sacks and get moved by a fork lift. They are emptied into a hopper, sieved and sorted to remove any poor ones. The beans are washed and rinsed, and the tomato sauce is mixed, and then both are put into tin cans and sealed. Finally the tins are baked in an oven, labelled and put into boxes.
- Central TV paperwork stated that this episode was re-cut from a previous Beans episode, but I don't know which episode that might have been.

In a commercial factory a truck load of potatoes is washed, peeled and fried in huge machinery, then salted and packed to be sold in the shops.

6. Chocolate
Children buy sweets and chocolate in a small shop. Chris Tarrant's favourite is chocolate, so we see how chocolate is made in a factory starting with sacks of beans from the West Indies. They are roasted, winnowed and sieved, then powdered and heated into a liquid. Milk, sugar and other ingredients are mixed in and the machines process the chocolate into Easter eggs. Workers in the factory mix together different colours of Smarties and pack an assortment into each egg, which are then wrapped and sold.
