Music Workshop Stage Two
Music Workshop Stage Two is a BBC Schools Radio series from the 1960s & 1970s, covering music for primary and secondary school pupils.
A series using traditional songs and melodies, generally with newly written lyrics and arrangements, to encourage listeners to join in with singing and playing instruments. Each term's songs and poems link to a particular theme or story, and build into a cantata that could be performed at the end of term. The termly theme, often linked to a particular country or area, gives scope for further creative work in the classroom.
History
Music Workshop Stage Two (or Stage II or Stage 2) developed from the original Music Workshop series which had begun in 1964. While Music Workshop Stage Two was on air the original series was known as Music Workshop Stage One.
Stage Two was introduced in 1966 to cater for almost exactly the same audience as Stage One, the two series existing side-by-side to offer a two year course for teachers of 8-10 year-olds with Stage Two steered slightly older towards 9-10 year-olds.
Then in 1970 the series were separated so that the original Music Workshop (Stage One) continued to serve 8-10 year-olds, while Music Workshop Stage Two was shifted to support 10-13 year-olds in the top years of primary school and the first years of middle or secondary schools. This separation was successful and created a new audience for BBC School Radio's music programmes.
The separation was completed in 1975 when Music Workshop Stage Two was relaunched as Music Makers, and the Stage One series returned to being called simply Music Workshop.
Originally both Music Workshop series were broadcast twice a week, with each having a 20 minute programme at the start of the week focussing on singing the songs, and then a 10 minute Follow Up programme on Thursdays which covered percussion, composition and other creative work on the same songs. Teachers could choose to follow only the singing programmes, or if they were more confident in creative follow-up they could also take the Follow Up programmes later in the week.
In 1969 Music Workshop Stage One brought together the two separate programmes into a single 30 minute weekly broadcast, and in 1970 Music Workshop Stage Two did the same. There was still a distinct point around 15-20 minutes into each broadcast when the presenter moved from singing (Music) to percussion and other follow-up work (Workshop) but all contained in a single broadcast.
