Mother Tongue Song and Story is a multi-language BBC schools radio series from the 1980s, covering early learning for primary school pupils.

  • the first 'block broadcast' of programmes specifically to aid tape recording by teachers, in Summer 1982
  • the same children's stories broadcast in English and in several Asian languages including Cantonese, Bengali, Gujarati & Punjabi, and Italian, Greek & Turkish
  • originally intended for transmission as a single 75-minute programme in Summer 1982, but I'm not certain whether this was broadcast as several planned schools radio broadcasts were cancelled aroung this time
  • transmitted as a series of 10-minute episodes in Autumn 1982
  • known as just Mother Tongue Story until 1983
