Games with Numbers
Games with Numbers is a BBC schools radio series from the 1940s, covering Mathematics for primary school pupils.
The BBC's first ever series dedicated to mathematics for schools, this was an experiment in different forms of presenting maths on the radio. It included dramatised programmes showing for example how maths comes in useful when shopping, a programme in which the presenter directly asked children to join in with mathematical games, and the final programme was a mental maths "arithmetical bee".
The experiment was not continued after the five episodes, and it would be 20 years before mathematics returned to school radio in a series called simply Mathematics - and well over half a century before mental maths drills were tried again in a series called Maths Challenge, which became a regular, popular part of school radio broadcasts and spawned several companion series for children of different ages.
