Here is a link to all of the Picture Box episodes in their sales catalogue (it's not all the episodes that were made, as they don't seem to have kept many recordings prior to 1972). Click on the "All" tab if it doesn't seem to produce any results.
If you browse through you will see a very sudden change between "Ben, Rosie and the Bear Part 2" which was broadcast on 14th June 1989 (and, incidentally, repeated 2 days later). It was presented by Alan Rothwell, as were all episodes from the previous 20 years. The next one after that was "Bread and Honey" on 20th September 1989, which was presented by Roger McGough and produced by Childsplay Productions Ltd.
I would imagine that you can blame the sudden change of focus and style on the introduction of the National Curriculum in England, Wales & NI, which put the kibosh on loads of schools programmes around that time and changed others beyond recognition, although I can't back that up with quotes or anything!
Thanks for the link. It is sad that the National Curriculum resulted in changing schools programmes so much. The "new" Picture Box seemed to "educational" if you know what I mean, and not as entertaining or as interesting as the Alan Rothwell version ("real Picture Box"!). I didn't realise that the Ben, Rosie and The Bear episodes were as late as Summer 1989, although I know they came late in the series' run.

It is interesting to know about the different presenters - I didn't realise You and Me had presenters in the Crow and Alice years as well. I remembered hearing about Mr Bits & Pieces when you mentioned him, although I have never heard of Purrfecta the Cat or Fred the Postman and his dog.
I remember that Clive's last name was Panto now you mentioned it. he later appeared in the first series of the short-lived kids sitcom Tricky Business in 1989 (which also featured a puppet rabbit, as you might remember).
I hadn't heard of the anniversary showings - this sounds interesting. I agree it would be interesting to find out all of what was repeated.

If you go down to your local library you should also find that you can have a look at old TV listings - at least in newspapers, or in larger towns they will probably have old Radio Timeses and TV Timeses. If you're extremely lucky they might have access to the TV Times Project which has searchable listings from the TV Times up to 1985, although their coverage of schools programmes is very patchy, and completely non-existent after 1983.

There were quite a few different sets of presenters in the mid-70s, including Stephen Leigh from the original Look and Read story Bob and Carol Look for Treasure, and Vicky Ireland from Words and Pictures. I have heard that Claire Chovil, who was the original You and Me producer and also created both Look and Read and Words and Pictures, didn't like puppets very much so it's not surprising that she favoured things like Crow and Alice who were stop-motion animation (weren't they? I've never seen them in action) and human presenters, rather than puppet characters like Duncan the Dragon, who came along later.
There were various short-lived set-ups, including a postman called Fred and his dog Albert in 1976, Mr Bits & Pieces and Purrfecta the cat in 1979, and the magic shop owned by Clive Panto with a puppet called Rabbit in 1982. After that was all Cosmo & Dibs and Wikipedia has an unusually well-informed article about that era of the series.
During 1994-95 they celebrated the series' 20th anniversary by showing some older episodes from the series history, including some with Duncan the Dragon and all sorts of older Cosmo & Dibs episodes including the very first from 1983. I don't think they showed any Crow & Alice episodes or any of the more obscure units. Surely somebody must have taped some of those repeats and can tell us for sure?

I also have a vague memory of Duncan the Dragon, as well as a magic shop with a rabbit puppet. Both Duncan and the Magic Shop (run by someone called Clive I seem to recall) mustn't have lasted long.
I never thought You and Me was as good when Baxter and Spike first appeared and they got rid of the market setting, although I was older then and I didn't see much of those series. The first time I saw Liz Smith on TV was as a You and Me presenter, she was really good at presenting the series and interacted well with Cosmo and Dibs. I can also remember Bill Owen presenting some episodes.
